David Cameron has vowed to make tackling poverty his top priority in 2016—after a year of waging war on the poor.
In a hypocritical New Year message to voters, the PM said fighting
poverty will be one of his four areas of focus this year, along with
tackling extremism, social mobility and housing.
In a message
posted on the Conservative Home website to mark the new year, Mr Cameron
claimed 2016 will be a "game-changer" for Britain.
He said—
"...We also go into the year confronting some DEEP SOCIAL PROBLEMS.
Ones that have BLIGHTED our country for TOO LONG. I want 2016 to be the
time when we REALLY START to CONQUER them. A CRUCIAL YEAR in this GREAT
TURN-AROUND DECADE. Because with ECONOMIC RENEWAL and SOCIAL REFORM we
can make everyone's lives more secure...These are the BIG CHALLENGES OF
OUR AGE, some of the biggest our nation has ever faced. AND THIS YEAR IS
A TEST IF OUR METAL—WHETHER WE PUT UP WITH OUR POVERTY OR PUT AN END TO
IT. IGNORE THE GLASS CEILING—OR SMASH IT. ABANDON THE TENANT—OR HELP
